ChatGPT watermark remover
The honest version: OpenAI has not deployed a statistical text watermark. What people find in ChatGPT text is invisible characters, unusual spaces and recognisable habits. The tool cleans both, shows what it found, and says plainly when there is no watermark to remove.

- August 2026: OpenAI has built a text watermark but has not deployed it. ChatGPT text carries no statistical mark.
- What people call a ChatGPT watermark: invisible characters (zero-width, narrow no-break spaces reported in April 2025), odd spaces, formatting debris.
- The tool lists every unusual character with its code point, normalises it, and shows a diff.
- A statistical check runs anyway: it reports a Claude or Gemini mark if the text went through those models.
- No promise about GPTZero, Turnitin or Originality: they read style, not a watermark. Planned prices from Free.
Inventory, check, rewrite.
Inventory
Every zero-width character, non-standard space, soft hyphen and formatting artefact is listed with its code point and count, then normalised.
Check
The statistical detector looks for a keyed watermark. On ChatGPT text it will normally report none, and it says so; a Claude or Gemini pass in the chain would show up here.
Rewrite
The engine re-samples the wording with a model that carries no mark and none of ChatGPT's habits, keeps meaning, entities, numbers and quotes, and shows a diff.
First, the honest answer: is ChatGPT text watermarked?
As of August 2026, OpenAI has not deployed a public statistical watermark on ChatGPT text, of the kind Anthropic now applies to Claude or Google applies to Gemini with SynthID-Text. OpenAI has said since 2024 that it built such a system and chose not to release it, citing the risk of hurting non-native English speakers and the ease of removal by paraphrase. So if a page tells you that every ChatGPT answer carries a secret cryptographic mark, it is out of date or wrong; our comparison of which AI vendors watermark text gives the status per vendor with sources. A "GPT watermark remover", in that light, is a cleaner and a rewriter, not a key breaker.
That does not mean ChatGPT text is clean. Three things are real, and each of them is what people actually mean when they search for a "ChatGPT watermark remover":
- Invisible and unusual characters. In April 2025 several researchers reported that some ChatGPT outputs contained non-standard spaces (narrow no-break spaces and similar Unicode characters) that looked like a marker. OpenAI described it as an unintended side effect rather than a watermark, and it went away, but zero-width characters, soft hyphens, smart quotes and odd spaces still leak into pasted text from many tools and editors.
- Stylometric signatures. ChatGPT has habits: certain openers, certain connectors, a fondness for balanced triads, hedged conclusions, and a very regular sentence rhythm. Detectors such as GPTZero or Turnitin do not read a watermark; they read these habits. This is what most people are trying to get rid of.
- Metadata on images and files. Images generated by OpenAI models carry C2PA provenance metadata. That is an image concern and this page is about text only.
How to see a "ChatGPT watermark" yourself, in Word or any editor
You do not need a tool to check for the character kind. In Microsoft Word, turn on formatting marks (the pilcrow button, or Ctrl+Shift+8): non-breaking spaces show as a small degree sign instead of a dot, and you can search for them with the code ^s in Find. Narrow no-break spaces (U+202F), the character named in the April 2025 reports, do not have a Word search code, so paste the text into a plain-text editor that highlights unusual Unicode (VS Code does, with "Render control characters" or its default ambiguous-character warning), or into any online code-point inspector. Zero-width spaces are the hardest to see: place the cursor at the end of a word and press the arrow key; if the cursor "sticks" for one press, there is an invisible character. The AI text cleaner does exactly this inventory for you and lists every code point with its count. What you cannot see this way is a stylistic signature or a statistical watermark, because neither is a character.
What the ChatGPT watermark remover does
The tool runs three passes on your text. First, a character clean-up, the same pass as the AI text cleaner: every zero-width character, non-standard space, soft hyphen and formatting artefact is listed and normalised, so you can see exactly what was there. Second, a statistical check: the detector looks for the signature of a keyed watermark. On ChatGPT text it will normally report "no statistical watermark found", and it will say so plainly. Third, the rewrite: the engine re-samples the wording with a model that carries no mark and no ChatGPT habits, keeps your meaning, entities, numbers, quotes and formatting, and shows a diff.
The result is a text that no longer carries the tell-tale patterns detectors key on. We do not claim it defeats every detector on every text: those detectors are probabilistic and change often. We show you a before and after score and let you judge.
Is there a ChatGPT watermark detector? What our check reports
There is no official ChatGPT watermark detector, because there is no deployed ChatGPT text watermark to detect (August 2026). What a "ChatGPT watermark detector" can honestly report is threefold: an inventory of invisible and unusual characters, a statistical check that will normally come back "no keyed watermark found" on ChatGPT text, and a note when the text also went through Claude or Gemini, whose marks do exist. That is exactly what our check prints, in that order, with the caveats. It never converts an absence of watermark into a verdict on authorship.
GPT watermark remover: what the name means in practice
People also search for a "GPT watermark remover". For GPT-4o, GPT-5 and their successors the answer is the same as above: the mark to remove is made of characters and habits, not of a key. The tool cleans the characters, rewrites the habits under a meaning check, and shows a diff. If a real statistical mark appears in a text (a Claude or Gemini pass somewhere in its history), the check says so and the Claude watermark remover or the SynthID text detector and remover takes over.
Why not just use a paraphraser or ask ChatGPT to rewrite itself?
Asking ChatGPT to "rewrite this so it sounds human" produces more ChatGPT text, with the same habits, often with the same connectors reshuffled. Generic paraphrasers swap synonyms word by word, which damages meaning and produces the flat, slightly wrong prose detectors are good at spotting. Unmarker works at the sentence level with a meaning lock: the wording changes, the claim does not. It also handles the boring part, the invisible characters, that a paraphraser ignores entirely.
If your text also went through Claude or Gemini
Many workflows chain models: a ChatGPT draft, a Claude proofread, a Gemini summary. From August 2026, the Claude pass alone can add a real statistical watermark to the whole passage it touched, and Gemini can add SynthID-Text. The tool detects and removes those as well; you do not need to know which model touched the text. See the Claude watermark remover and the SynthID-Text page for the specifics of each mark.
What stays intact
- Facts, figures, dates, names, links and quotations.
- Markdown, HTML, lists, tables and code.
- Your language, among English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese.
- Your intent: the tool will not add or drop claims.
Use it for the right reasons
People use the tool to publish drafts under their own name after real editing, to stop clients' detectors from flagging legitimately human work that a model only polished, and to normalise text before it goes into a CMS or a translation memory. If a school, an employer or a client requires you to disclose AI assistance, disclose it; the tool is not a way around that, and we say so on our note on whether you should.
Planned pricing
Free: three texts a day, up to 1,500 words each. Pro: 9 dollars a month, 5 dollars locked for early-access members. API from 0.50 dollars per 10,000 words. Planned launch prices; the waitlist gets them first.
Questions people ask
Does ChatGPT add an invisible watermark to its text?
Not a statistical watermark, as of August 2026. OpenAI built one and has not released it. Some outputs have contained unusual Unicode spaces, and ChatGPT text has recognisable stylistic habits that detectors key on. The tool cleans both.
Can this remove the C2PA metadata from ChatGPT images?
No. This tool is for text only. Image provenance metadata is a different problem and we do not address it.
Will it beat GPTZero or Turnitin?
Those are stylometric detectors, not watermark readers, and they change often. The rewrite removes the habits they key on and shows you a before and after score, but we do not promise a result on every text.
Does it keep my formatting?
Yes. Markdown, HTML, lists, tables, links and code blocks are preserved. Quotes are never rewritten.
